Building our industrial strategy – TSA response

In January 2017 the government published proposals to strengthen the UK economy, partly in response to the recent decision to leave the EU. The consultation paper, Building our industrial strategy, focused on 10 areas where action is needed to help businesses develop and thrive. 

TSA represents more 350 members in health, housing, social care and industry who commission or provide technology enabled care (TEC). We responded to the strategy because our members play a significant role in the UK economy and need an industrial strategy that is powerful, forward thinking, able to withstand Brexit uncertainty and focused on improving the lives of people across the country.

Our recommendations are as follows:

·        Ensure greater access to funding for promising technologies and place develop technologies alongside patients and practitioners. Never compromise quality and safety. 

·        Nurture digital entrepreneurs, recognise where technology could augment or replace human interventions and develop digital skills within the population.

·        Address issues of interoperability/open data and cyber security. 

·        Reduce adoption times of 15 or more years for promising health technologies. 

·        Create opportunities for smaller businesses to access the NHS and for individual commissioning via personal budgets.  

·        Promote a healthy, digitally included workforce. Share information to learn from successes and failures in the UK and elsewhere. 

·        Look at the pathway from manufacture of green energy to use by businesses and consumers and ensure costs to consumers are not prohibitive.  

·        Engage with entrepreneurs and innovators to look at where proven TEC can make a difference to outcomes at lower costs. 

·        Map centres of excellence, digital catapults, technology hubs and research facilities and address duplication and overlap.   

·        Transform services in a systematic manner, replacing non-effective approaches with proven innovations at scale and address the loss of key healthcare personnel as a result of Brexit.
