Navigating the Digital Transition

In response to fears surrounding the impending analogue to digital shift, a halfway house solution is offered to smooth the choppy waters of transitioning your telephony and telecare infrastructure

We are all aware of the issues that are (or will be) caused by the analogue to digital transition. Most processes and equipment will need to change, or at least be updated to the current best practices. Although these changes are a result of the digital transition, we should also see this as an opportunity to improve the way that we work and to deliver a more efficient, defined service.

Today, in our digital world, we can see whether a device is connected or not. This is a new level of information available to us and we need to decide what we will do with it. We will also be better placed to know when a vulnerable person hasn’t been in contact for an extended period. The question is what do we do with these new levels of information and what should the best code of practice be?

There will be problems and challenges, like those across other sectors, as we go through this transition. These are predominately caused by trying to make analogue solutions work in an increasingly digital world and will get harder as the network gets closer to being fully digital. Unfortunately, there is no magic fix to swap everything overnight. Although this is a turbulent time for many, it is a journey that leads to a better solution and ultimately a better outcome for vulnerable people.

At CSL, we are currently designing and testing a solution that will allow digital devices to work using analogue protocol; allowing one to buy a digital solution and use it in analogue mode until the entire chain is digitally enabled. We are urging people to avoid buying analogue-only devices. These products will only work for a limited amount of time and ultimately the price of buying, installing and replacing will be more than the price of a digital solution.

Alternatively, if your Monitoring Centre isn’t yet ready to accept digital signals, you can buy digital-ready analogue devices, which will use analogue protocols until you are ready to switch to digital. This switch can then be carried out both instantly and remotely via an over the air upgrade. By using these digital-ready devices you can be confident that devices you buy today will work in the future.
