CASE:
Richard's (56) life turned completely upside down when he suffered a cerebral infarction 10 months ago. The left side of his body becomes paralyzed, and Richard is at the beginning of a years-long rehabilitation process. By using Genus, Richard feels like a human being again in the rehabilitation centre instead of a patient. After an accident with brain damage, the patient had to recuperate for a long time and quickly becoming overstimulated.
The care organization installed the Genus Frame which provided the following benefits:
How it started
In September 2020 it happened. Richard completely unexpectedly suffers a cerebral infarction with all its consequences. After a period of 2 weeks in the hospital, Richard is transferred to a rehabilitation centre.
This is where his recovery process begins. Because Richard is paralysed on the left side of his body and can only use one hand, it is difficult to operate his smartphone.
Out of the daily grind
Genus is easy to operate with one hand and was therefore a godsend for Richard. Genus was positioned so that Richard had a good view of the digital photo frame from bed. His family and friends were able to send him photos via the Genus app that he has fond memories of.
Photos of Richard mountain biking with friends, holiday photos, photos of the children when they were small, as well as uplifting messages and sayings. “I felt like I could look at those photos for hours, they made me feel like a human being again instead of a patient,” says Richard. Richard's nurses can also confirm this.
Through Genus they saw the man Richard was before his stroke, which allowed them to get to know him better and make conversations easier. Richard also did well with video calling via Genus.
Positive influence on recovery process
Richard's wife, Peggy, used the Genus app daily during Richard's time in the rehabilitation centre. In addition to photos, she sent messages and sayings to Richard to motivate and support him in his recovery process. “I saw that receiving photos and messages did him good and that was very nice to see.”
Because Richard initially had difficulty telling time due to his cerebral infarction, he often worried when Peggy drove home from the rehabilitation centre. “To reassure him, I immediately sent a message via the Genus app when I got home. That was really a godsend!”
Little by little, Richard is getting back to his old self, although his agenda is currently still filled with therapies and physio treatments.
Fortunately, Richard can use his smartphone again and has therefore said goodbye to Genus. “Genus was really a support for me in the rehabilitation centre. I have come to appreciate the impact of photos and video calling much more and I wish everyone who is in a similar situation to have a copy”!
