Background
Jan (69), had a history of substance misuse, mental health challenges, lifestyle issues and a complex home environment. “Employees were anxious and reluctant to go there,” explains the care organization, as they never knew what would await during their visits. Home-care staff were required to attend in pairs and police or security personnel were often involved to support staff during higher-risk visits. Jan’s visits were extremely resource-intensive and the care provider was looking for a solution that would make sure medication was taken on time, while providing a safe environment for their carers.
Solution
The Evondos Anna, an automated medication dispenser, was introduced to Jan. The video function on the dispenser was introduced to provide safe medication management while promoting independence. Jan’s increased independence and reduced reliance on in-person care visits improved his overall quality of life.
The video function reduced the stress associated with daily home visits while maintaining safe medication management. Jan became more comfortable with the technology, often looking forward to his video conversations and eventually progressed to managing his medication
Carer benefit: Improve staff efficiency and wellbeing
For carers and the wider care organisation, Evondos delivered both practical and emotional benefits. Previously, each medication visit required two care staff members, and due to the unpredictable nature of the care environment, police or security services were often involved. This created significant strain on resources, as well as elevated stress and safety concerns for staff.
With the move to assisted video monitoring, these pressures were substantially reduced. Medication support could be delivered remotely, meaning fewer in-person visits were required. This resulted in measurable resource savings, including reduced staffing demands, less travel time, and the elimination of routine involvement from outside sources – all without compromising medication and patient safety.
The impact on caregiver wellbeing was also significant. Staff experienced a reduction in anxiety and felt safer performing their roles, knowing they could deliver effective care without entering high-risk situations. At the same time, the regular one-to-one video interactions helped strengthen relationships with Jan, enhancing communication and trust despite the shift away from physical visits.
Overall, the intervention enabled a more sustainable and efficient care model, improving outcomes not only for Jan but also for the carers and organisation supporting them.
Client benefit: increased independence, safer care
Jan’s care journey transformed significantly with the introduction of the Evondos Anna. Previously reliant on frequent in-person visits, Jan often experienced disruption to daily life and heightened stress linked to the intensity of care delivery. Through this new approach, medication adherence improved steadily, as carers were able to supervise and confirm administration remotely, ensuring consistency and safety without the need for physical presence.
This shift also brought meaningful improvements to Jan’s mental health and overall wellbeing. The removal of frequent interventions reduced stress and created a calmer, more predictable routine. With ongoing monitoring in place, Jan remained safe and supported, but with far greater independence.
Importantly, Jan was able to continue living at home - something that played a vital role in maintaining a sense of normality and control. The introduction of regular video interactions fostered a positive connection with care providers, transforming care from a potentially intrusive process into one that Jan could look forward to. This increased engagement supported better mental wellbeing while allowing Jan to retain autonomy over daily activities and routines.
